Abstract

In the months after George Floyd’s murder, Columbus protests took place in dozens of U.S. cities, toppling monuments and calling into question Christopher Columbus’ legacy. Protests were present in at least 63 cities, such as Chicago, Philadelphia and Columbus, Ohio. These protests and other petitions and campaigning have resulted in the removal or relocation of Columbus monuments in 35+ cities. Though many cities have removed their statues, Christopher Columbus remains commemorated in 6,209 places in the U.S. including buildings, roads, statues, mountains and more. His name is present in every state except Hawaii, and in our nation’s capital: the District of Columbia.
